New York Times: New Tool in TV Guide's Effort to Stay Relevant: A DVD

TV Guide is giving away a free DVD of television clips to people on the East and West coasts who buy the magazine on the newsstand.

The DVD features clips of 17 new and returning shows that editors recommend for summer viewing. The goal, TV Guide said, is to grab the attention of younger readers.

While networks and magazines have teamed up on CD-ROM's and DVD's before, they have been promotional tools featuring single networks.

Even though the networks provided the content free of charge, the overall cost of the project - estimated by one TV Guide executive at $300,000 - was too high to make it possible to give the DVD to magazine subscribers as well as newsstand buyers.

The Guardian [UK]: Pirate DVD Racket

Police found tens of thousands of films, plus 40 DVD towers, nine DVD burners, eight DVD label printers and two industrial-size machines. The factory was capable of 24-hour production runs, with cramped and squalid living conditions on site.

London police were called to make further investigations. This is the third major pirate operation that police have discovered in Greater London since February.

Evening Gazette [UK]: Dumping Dodgy DVDs

People who own pirate DVDs have been invited to watch their illegal copies being shredded - and receive the free genuine article in its place.

Research shows 35% more people in the North-East of England have knowingly bought a pirate DVD than anywhere else in the UK.

Retailers and suppliers are running a campaign to highlight the problem of pirate DVDs and trading standards groups will be on hand to remind consumers that it is not a victimless crime.
